Well, it's finally here. This new web site that I can actually work on. For someone like me 50+ (lets be real....it's 60+) this computer stuff drives me crazy. But enough of that, lets talk. Here is some background info on Doug, I and our family.
I am thrilled that Doug and I have been so very, very blessed to have this beautiful B&B, known as the Garden Gate, actually, the legal name is the "Gardners Garden Gate BnB and Cottages" how perfect is that. This has been a dream of mine for many, many years and Doug is the wonderful husband and partner that enables me to live this dream.
We lived in SW Pa, halfway between Pittsburgh and Morgantown near the village of Perryopolis and Linden Hall. Doug and I were married in 2010, I have 2 handsome sons, all grown and they have beautiful families of their own. Both have given service to this country and I am a very proud Mama. My 2 daughter in laws are both creative and wonderful women. The only granddaughter is an RN, the oldest grandson graduated high school and is working and saving money for when he decides which school he will choose. Rounding out our family, is the youngest at age 13...he loves to make people laugh and wants to be a pilot.
The dream was to build on our property in Pa...but God has led us here, in the middle of the Amish Heartland. The hills are rolling and green. The people are kind and gentle. When you come to this area, you will breathe a little easier. Life is a bit slower. We take the time to admire God's handiwork, whether it be the flowers in the gorgeous gardens or the birds singing as they tend to their young. This place is some say magical, but we say it is definitely Blessed.
We are sitting in the middle of Amish neighbors, as we are the only "English" on our road, We hear the clippity clop of the horses as they pull their buggy, perhaps taking the family to the store or a visit to another neighbor, that is a sound that gets in your soul and you never tire of. The women in our neighborhood are hardworking taking care of their homes, baking, caring for their husbands and children and yet, they make the time to visit us and maybe pull some of my weeds also!!! The men work hard for their families. I always thought that the men would be stand offish even with their own families, but have found that they are the most caring, gentle and loving fathers that I have ever known.
There are soooo many things to do and see in this beautiful area. If you like to shop, this is the place for you. There are so many crafts, quilts, primitives, antiques (I don't mean Me) to look at. The indoor and outdoor furniture are all works of art, so beautiful to see how they can take a log and coax the most beautiful table out of it. These are just some of the treasures that you can see. There are museums, farms to tour, buggy rides, historic buildings, candy making, candle making and carving to name a few of the things to do.
Lets talk food!. You can have a dinner experience at an Amish home (just ask when you book) we tell you that you will walk up the hill but you will roll back down when you are finished. Perhaps one of the many, many buffets in the area is what you would like to try...after the mashed potatoes, noodles, meats, salads and desserts, you won't need to eat until tomorrow. Don't forget we also have Chalet in the Valley, which is more Swill than Dutch, but gives our guests 10% discount. Of course no one leaves the area without trying one of the great bakeries that are near. I personally cannot pass up the homemade ice cream. It is like heaven on earth...cold and creamy and melts in your mouth.
Well I guess I should close now....I probably talked your ear off, but there is sooo much to be said for living here in the Amish Heartland. Come out and see for yourself all that it offers....who knows, maybe you will stay forever too.
Blessings to you and yours,
Carol and Doug at the Garden Gate
